Who’s behind the screen?
Hello! I'm Ryan Devries, the founder and lead Game Master at "The Tavern," a unique space designed for tabletop role-playing game enthusiasts. With over 8 years of experience in dungeon mastering, I've dedicated myself to creating immersive, engaging gaming sessions for both newcomers to TTRPGs and experienced players alike.

My journey into game mastering was fueled by a passion for storytelling and a background in improv. This background isn't just a footnote; it's the foundation of my approach to TTRPGs. Competing at a national level, my team and I won the Canadian Improv Games, a testament to our creativity, quick thinking, and ability to adapt—a skill set I bring to every game session I lead. I focus on fun at the table and prioritize that first. Then we sprinkle in the mechanics and rules of games but firstmost, we're all here for the story!

"The Tavern" was born out of a love for TTRPGs and a desire to enhance the gaming experience. It's more than just a place to play; it's a space where players can come together, challenge themselves, and create memorable stories. I believe in the power of games to bring people together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared adventure. Whether you're stepping into a TTRPG for the first time or you're a seasoned player looking for new challenges, I invite you to join us at "The Tavern" for an unforgettable adventure.

Sessions can be booked using our Calendy here.
How do we pay?

Balance: Due 24 hours before your game (e-transfer) or at session start if paying cash in person.
Rescheduling: You may reschedule once with 72+ hours’ notice—your deposit carries over.
Late cancellation / second reschedule: If you cancel with <72 hours’ notice or reschedule more than once, you forfeit the deposit.

Are there any requirements to join a game?
There are no specific requirements; players of all experience levels, from brand-new adventurers to seasoned Dungeon Masters, are welcome. You do however need to have a group of 3-8 people to run a session. We recommend the sweet spot in between 4-6 players for a group!
How often are games run, and what is the typical session length?
There is a variety of availability each week. Sessions typically last about 3 hours, though allowing extra time at the end is appreciated.
What type of sessions does "The Tavern" offer?
We offer a range of sessions from "In Season" one-shots to multi-year campaigns upon request, with ongoing custom campaigns being tailored to the unique story arc of the party. I will always work with you to create the experience you want!
What should I do to prepare for a session?
You need to bring any snacks/drinks you wish to enjoy during your adventure

If you're a new player, you do not need to prepare anything! Your only job is to arrive on time, we'll take care of the rest.
Do I need to bring any materials?
For New and Seasoned Adventurers besides food and drink, it is recommended you bring a pen and paper to take notes during the adventure! These can be nice to take home as a moment0 of your journeys! If you wish to bring your dice, feel free to do so!

For Seasoned Adventurers, if you wish to craft your own character, please bring character sheets (printed or electronic) and any dice you wish to use.
How does "The Tavern" support new players?
We take care of the gameplay and mechanics. We are professionals at teaching Dungeons and Dragons 5e and will walk you through all steps of game play. We handle the rules and textbook stuff, where you simply get to let your imagination run wild!
What measures are in place to ensure a safe and inclusive environment?
We will determine ground rules during the first session with a new group where we flag appropriate/inappropriate subjects and set boundaries of play. If there is ever a point where a player is uncomfortable with what is happening we use the "x-card" rule. This means that each player will be given a playing card and upon any subject that they wish to pass, they can raise their card or cross their arms and the story will skip over that subject.
